typography and logos March 11th, 2009
For reasons I may never understand fully myself, I have always had a fascination with type and typography. I love how expressive a typeface can make a sentence or paragraph of text. Each one its own voice.
When I arrived at RIT I was lucky enough to befriend Charles Bigelow, world renown typographer and fontologist. Professor Bigelow has been part of the type community for the past three decades, and with his partner Kris Holmes, they have released some of the most well known, (and highly regarded) typefaces of the digital age. Among others, they gave the world the Lucida Font Family, Apple Chancery, Isadora, and Wingdings.
Professor Bigelow opened my eyes to a whole new world of type. The history, beauty and sometimes, hidden secrets that make type speak to me can be harnessed by a designer to make type speak to their audience. It is with this goal in mind that I craft logos and artistic poem like samples of type to show the world how I hear the phrase, company name, or text in my own mind; With eyes bright and full of enthusiasm.
